Empowering Girls’ Education in South Sudan: HelpEducation South Sudan Distributes 445 Dignity Kits

In a significant step toward promoting girls’ education and well-being in South Sudan, HelpEducation South Sudan, with funding from Education Cannot Wait (ECW) and in partnership with Finn Church Aid (FCA), recently distributed 445 dignity kits to adolescent primary school girls in 10 primary schools across Awerial and Yirol East Counties of Lakes State.

The dignity kits, which include essential hygiene products, were distributed to ensure that girls have the resources they need to manage their menstrual hygiene confidently. This initiative recognizes the role that menstrual health management plays in empowering girls to remain in school, attend classes regularly and excel academically, particularly in underserved communities.

For many girls in South Sudan, menstrual hygiene management poses a significant challenge, often leading to absenteeism from school or forcing them to drop out. By providing dignity kits, HelpEducation South Sudan aims to break this cycle and encourage girls to stay in school.

The impact of this effort is profound, as highlighted by Ayen, a 16-year-old Class 6 pupil at Mamer Primary School in Yirol East County. She expressed her gratitude, saying:

"Now I will never miss a school day because of period. I will never doubt myself. I will always feel clean during period. Thank you, HelpEducation South Sudan."

The 445 dignity kits were distributed to primary schools in both Awerial and Yirol East Counties, targeting mature girls who are most vulnerable to dropping out due to menstrual challenges. The initiative not only helps to reduce absenteeism but also fosters a supportive environment where girls can focus on their education without fear or shame.

This impactful project is made possible through the support from Education Cannot Wait (ECW) and implementation by HelpEducation South Sudan in partnership with Finn Church Aid (FCA). Such partnerships demonstrate the importance of collaboration in addressing educational and social challenges in South Sudan.

Through this initiative, HelpEducation South Sudan reaffirms its commitment to creating equal educational opportunities for all children, particularly adolescent girls living with disabilities. By addressing the barriers that prevent girls from attending school, the organization is paving the way for a brighter future for young girls in South Sudan.

This project is a reminder that empowering girls including those with disabilities starts with meeting their basic needs. It is a call to governments, NGOs, and communities to prioritize menstrual health management as an essential part of quality education.

HelpEducation South Sudan continues to lead by example, ensuring that no girl is left behind in the pursuit of quality and inclusive education. Together, we can build a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
