About HESS

HelpEducation South Sudan (HESS) is a nonprofit humanitarian, developmental and non-partisan organization established to address the most urgent literacy needs of the people of South Sudan. It is implementing a range of interventions in the areas of education that include; literacy programmes, teacher training, inclusive education, education in emergencies, girl child education, women and youth empowerment life skills programmes, WASH in education, child protection in education, gender in education, peace building in education, advocacy on education policies, leadership and governance in education & TVET. It is registered by the relevant authorities in the country including the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (Reg. #696) with a legal mandate to serve the people of South Sudan. We have had and still having programmes in Greater Bhar El Ghazal (Awerial, Tonj South, Gogrial, Yirol East and Rumbek), Greater Equatoria (Juba, Terekeka, Mundri) and Greater Upper Nile (Bor South). Since our founding in 2014, we have committed ourselves to reducing illiteracy rate in our project locations, strengthening leadership and governance systems at all levels of government (National, States, Counties, Payams, Bomas and schools) by training government and local authority officials, community leaders, parent-teacher associations, students’ leaders, women and youth groups on management, delivery, and coordination of education programmes in line with the existing national education policies including the General Education Act of 2012 and subsequence Education Sector Plans, Regional and international frameworks (SDGs, CESA, EAC ).

 

Through our programmes, we have;
Girls Trained on Women Rights, Hygiene promotion

Trained 75 girls in 6 high schools in Juba and Bor on Women Rights, Hygiene promotion and citizenship. In addition, HESS has spread peace messages to local communities in Jonglei and Lakes State. 

Supported 35 Community Girl Schools

Supported 35 Community Girl Schools through support from UNESCO, targeting 1500 (70% Females and 30% Males learners) in Mundri and Terekeka to enable the targeted learners complete their 4th grade in the Community Girls School and transit to 5th grade in the formal basic education system. through UNESCO funding.

Education Cannot Wait Project (Phase I)

We implemented the Education Cannot Wait Project (Phase I) – South Sudan Multi Year Resilience Program in Awerial County of Lakes State (in consortium with Windle Trust International), Supported 15 Primary Schools (also supported 2 Early Childhood Development Centres, 2 Adults Learning Program and 2 Pastoralist Education Program Centres within the Primary schools) and 1 Secondary School with 11, 495 learners (7,490 Males and 4,005 Females) + 110 teachers = 11,605.

Supporting Effective Humanitarian Partnership (SEPH)

Implemented the Supporting Effective Humanitarian Partnership (SEPH) Project (supported by Save the Children) which capacity-built staff on effectiveness and efficiency in Humanitarian response, while operationalizing the core humanitarian standards and principle of partnerships, for a more meaningful local ownership.

Back to School Learning Campaigns

Supported Back to School Learning Campaigns in Rumbek, Bor and Awerial County throughout the years for enrollment and mobilization of learners back to school.

Let’s Talk Campaigns

HESS in collaboration with UNESCO, implemented the “Let’s Talk”, Early and Unintended Pregnancy Campaign in Awerial County to fight issue of Early and Unintended Pregnancy that is affecting many adolescent girls in Awerial County and Lakes State at large.

Education Cannot Wait (ECW) – Multi Year Resilience Program (MYRP) Phase II

HESS is implementing the ECW – MYRP II in Awerial County and Yirol East in Lakes State, supporting 35 schools, targeting new enrolment of 8606 learners, including children with disabilities. The ECW MYRP II will be addressing 5 priority outcomes to ensure safe and equitable access, improved quality of teaching and learning, increased inclusivity and a more resilient education system. Throughout the implementation of the ECW MYRP II, HESS in collaboration with the Ministry of General Education and Instructions (MOGEI) Finn Church Aid, seek to reach the most indeed learners and improve the overall capacity to reach more children, especially adolescents and children with disabilities.

We are also implanting UNICEF Project in Tonj South in Warrap State – construction of Semi – Permanent of 6 Blocks of 12 classrooms in 5 primary schools to increase safe, quality and inclusive learning space to crisis-affected boys and girls with community participation in Tonj South of Warrap State.

GPE Project in Awerial County

HESS is implementing GPE project in Awerial County of Lakes State, Constructing permanent classrooms – 2 Blocks of 8 classrooms, 8 stances of Gender Segregated and Inclusive latrines for girls and boys (5 stances for girls and 3 stances for Boys) in Awerial Complex Primary school in Awerial County of Lakes State. This will increase and enhance safe, equitable, quality and inclusive learning opportunity for crisis-affected girls and boys at Awerial Complex and children from the nearby communities.

We are also implementing the Local Response Pool Funds project – Growing School Garden in 19 primary schools in Awerial County, with support from Save the Children to address issues of literacy and livelihood that is affecting crisis-affected school children.

Our Philosophy

We are concerned about vulnerable and marginalized people nationwide, remembering their untapped skills and talents, aware of people desire to reduce the effect of vulnerability which result to vicious circle of poverty through full participation and initiation of appropriate projects, believing in people’s initiatives to overcome their tragic circumstances through mobilization of efficient resources especially the human and financial resources.
