For communities living in remote and climate-affected areas, reaching every child with quality education and climate-resilient support requires reliable mobility. The new vehicle, handed over to HESS by Save the Children South Sudan, represents an important boost to field operations and will enable project teams to reach schools and communities that are often difficult to access.
Overcoming Access Challenges in Rumbek North
Rumbek North presents significant logistical challenges that can affect the timely implementation of education activities. Seasonal flooding, difficult terrain and long distances between communities frequently limit access to schools and project locations.
During the rainy season, unpaved roads can quickly become muddy and impassable, making travel extremely difficult. Eroded routes and challenging terrain further restrict access to some BRACE-supported schools, while the long distances between communities can delay the delivery of essential materials and reduce the frequency of school monitoring and community engagement visits.
For a project focused on strengthening the resilience of children, schools and education systems to climate-related challenges, reliable transportation is therefore essential.
Unlocking Greater Impact
The dedicated BRACE project vehicle will significantly strengthen HESS's ability to deliver activities efficiently across Rumbek North.

Climate-smart materials, teaching and learning resources, and other project supplies can be transported more reliably to BRACE-supported schools.

Improved mobility will allow HESS teams to conduct more frequent school monitoring visits, provide support to teachers and learners, follow up on project activities and collect timely feedback from communities.
Enhanced community engagement:
Regular access to remote communities will strengthen communication and collaboration with parents, education authorities, school leaders and other local stakeholders involved in building a more resilient education system.
Strengthening Climate-Resilient Education
Climate-related shocks continue to affect children's access to education in many parts of South Sudan. In areas such as Rumbek North, flooding and poor road infrastructure can isolate schools and communities, affecting learning, teacher support and the delivery of essential education services.
Through the BRACE project, HESS is working with partners and communities to strengthen the resilience of children and the education system so that learning can continue despite climate-related challenges.
The arrival of the project vehicle is therefore more than an operational improvement. It is an investment in access, continuity and opportunity for children living in some of the hardest-to-reach communities.
